Prerequisites to Receiving a Concealed Handgun License: |
Eligibility- again, must meet eligibility requirements; otherwise the State of Texas will not issue a concealed handgun license- Click Here for details. |
Minimum Age- For civilians, the minimum age to apply for a license is 21, where the minimum age to take the course is 19 (the course itself is good for 2- years). The minimum age for active military to apply for a license is 18. |
Contact the State of Texas & Submit Your Application- this is also the prerequisite to making your appointment to have your fingerprints taken. There is one of two ways to submit your license application:

Pay the State Licensing Fee- must be paid at the time you submit your license application.

Fingerprinting- must submit license application and pay the State licensing fee first, but then are eligible to book a fingerprint appointment.

Effective March 1st 2011, instructors or law enforcement are no longer allowed to take CHL prints.

The State of Texas has contracted with L1 Solutions to handle all fingerprints,

Passport Photos- no longer required for Texas residents. Specifically, the DPS will use your existing driver's license photo on the CHL license. For students that are not Texas residents or have a Texas D.L., will provide passport photos (free of charge). |
CHL 100 Form- this is the document certifying you passed the course and must be sent with your final application to DPS. |
