Low prices on the Springfield Ronin EMP 4" 9mm start at Champion Firearms.
Downsizing the 1911. The Springfield EMP is the first 1911 pistol successfully downsized to the exact cartridge dimensions of a 9mm. Over the years, other 9mm 1911's were simply full chassis .45ACP pistol whose magazine and feed ramp were modified to make the smaller cartridge work.
In essence, they were .45ACP 1911's re- chambered for 9mm without making the pistol any smaller. Springfield took a radically different approach on this project by downscaling the entire 1911.
The result is an ultra reliable, ultra accurate, ultra compact pistol. The fit and finish are meticulous, and it has extras like a slightly beveled mag well and rounded edges on its ejection port.
In fact, if you attempt to charge the slide by grabbing the rear serrations below the sight, there is no chance of injury due to sharp edges. A lot of care and attention to detail went to into the design, and it's a well-made 1911.
The grip angle is the same as the standard 1911, but the grip itself is thinner, and the internals are smaller to work in a shorter space. The magazines are stainless steel, made by Mec-Gar in Italy, and one ten round magazines are supplied with bumpers.
Each has a slam plate that sticks out beyond the bottom of the gun. Because of the slightly extended magazine, the EMP is a three-finger grip for even the biggest hands. As of 2017, the Springfield EMP no longer includes a holster, magazine loader, or magazine pouch as a part of any package.
The grips are South American Cocobolo with machine-cut checkering and an Springfield Armory logo. The sights are low profile carry-style, with no snag points, and the white dot rear sight easily acquires the red fiber optic front sight. The extended thumb safety is ambidextrous, and the trigger and hammer are skeletonized. The forged steel slide wears a black Armory Kote finish and is home to a 3 stainless steel, match grade, heavy bull barrel.
The EMP does not have a bushing in the front like a regular
1911. About the only unpleasant thing about the gun is that you have to use a
special insert to take it down, or at least to take the barrel out of the
frame.
You lock the slide forward, then clip a little plastic piece to the guide rod.
This prevents the guide rod from going back to full length, so you can pull it
out.
Lose that little part and you wont have fun disassembling your EMP.
Springfield 1911s also come with an internal locking system on the rear of the
grip that uses a special key, two of which come with the gun.The skeletonized aluminum trigger is match grade quality and set at 5-1/2 lbs. The grip safety has a raised memory groove for a more positive release during quick draw and stress fire situations. The pistol features a lightweight forged aluminum alloy frame, and this little gun's overall weight is listed at a mere 27 ounces.
Another advantage is less recoil than a .45. It is often said that in
the middle of a life-threatening event, the shooter wont notice recoil.
However, it is still there and can make getting the sights back on
target for a follow-up shot slower.
You are kidding yourself if
you think that you wont need a follow-up shot with a .45. There are
plenty of cases where a perpetrator has taken a round to a critical area
and kept going long enough to kill or injure a victim.
So even
with a .45, one shot may not be enough to stop an assault. The EMP has a
single-action trigger that encourages accurate shooting compared to
double-action or striker-fired guns.
It also retains the thumb
and grip safeties, which help to reduce the possibility of accidental
discharge while drawing or holstering.
Overall, the Springfield EMP 9mm is an accurate, reliable, safe and well made pistol designed to provide all the tactical advantages of a 1911, but in a package much easier to carry concealed.
