The Perfect Training Platform. There is no shortage of good .22 pistols on the market today. However, there are a few important features that make the Smith & Wesson M&P22 Compact really stand apart from the rest.

Perhaps the most unique aspect of this rimfire pistol is that Smith & Wesson engineers set out to make a close replica of their outstanding centerfire M&P pistol. It has virtually the same fit and feel in the hand, and will provide an affordable, easy to use training companion to the standard production series handgun.

It has been said that for an action to become instinctive in human beings, it must be performed at least 3,000 times to be firmly ingrained into muscle memory. Over the duration of 3,000 rounds, the cost differential between .22LR and centerfire ammunition can be staggering.

While the price of .22LR ammo has steadily risen in the past several years, it is still substantially cheaper to shoot than a comparable 9mm. For example, the average going rate (in 2015) for cheap .22LR is $0.07 cents a round, while 9mm target is running somewhere around $0.29 cents per round. Over the duration of 3,000 rounds, that would equate to a shooter paying $660 more to train with a 9mm versus the .22LR-- or the equivalent of purchasing almost two brand new M&P22 Compact pistols every single year.

While there is no substitute for trigger time behind the pistol you intend to carry, training and quality reps are the ultimate goal when trying to improve your overall shooting skills. Another advantage of the M&P22 Compact is the recoil and muzzle blast are significantly reduced in a rimfire pistol, so the benefit to a new shooter trying to develop proper shooting habits, without flinching in the process, is incalculable.

Yet another advantage of the Smith & Wesson over other competing brands attempting to clone popular centerfire line guns for the purposes of training is the greatly improved reliability rates. Models such as the Sig Sauer Mosquito have been notoriously finicky, where the M&P22 has enjoyed much more reliable consistency across a broader spectrum of .22LR ammunition.

A user friendly feature of the M&P22 Compact is its disassembly system. While field striping, cleaning and routine maintenance are not near as easy as on a standard M&P centerfire pistol, it is certainly far less difficult than that of a Ruger MKIII or Browning Buck Mark.

An ambidextrous thumb activated manual safety blocks the striker and prevents discharge until the shooter depresses the extended lever, allowing the trigger to then move rearward. Unlike most rimfire pistols, the design incorporates a Picatinny accessory rail for adding tactical accessories such as flashlights or lasers.

The gun has a sleek, lightweight, contoured, aluminum alloy slide that provides secure loading or unloading. The barrel and slide are made of stainless steel that's coated with a durable black hard coat anodized finish.

The Smith & Wesson M&P22 Compact frame contains a set of forward and rear steel blocks that house the fire control mechanism. These serve as the guides upon which the slide reciprocates.

Considering the pistol has a slide that only contacts the frame at four points, instead of full-length contact like most other designs, it makes for a very reliable, self-cleaning style rail system that leaves plenty of room to eject dirt, grit, or sand out of the action. This pistol has a 3.56" barrel, weighs in at a mere 15.3- ounces and has a DAO trigger pull of roughly 6.5 pounds.

The two compact 10- round magazines provided are made of genuine steel. A set of Novak style white outline sights sit on top of the slide, are highly visible, easy to use and track reasonably well.

Overall, the Smith & Wesson M&P22 Compact is a low recoil, inexpensive .22LR training pistol designed to reliably run a broad spectrum of rimfire ammunition while providing a similar look and feel to its centerfire counterpart..
