Smith & Wesson Model 69 .44 Magnum
start at Champion Firearms:
The 629 On A Diet. The Smith & Wesson Model 69 is a stainless steel .44 Magnum revolver built on the medium L- frame platform. At first glance, it almost appeared as though the company's engineers took the mighty 629 and put it on a diet.
The result is a slimmer, trimmer, lighter weight revolver that shed one of its rounds. Formerly, the L- Frame Smith & Wesson's were typically reserved for the .357 Magnum or .44 Special cartridges, which have roughly half the power of the .44 Magnum.
Anyone concerned about the longevity or durability of such a powerful round downsized into a smaller frame should take comfort in the fact that Smith & Wesson mills their frames from forged stainless steel. Due to the smaller frame and space restrictions, the revolver has a five shot fluted cylinder. This big- bore wheel gun is accurate, reliable, weatherproof and still powerful enough to handle hot .44 magnum ammunition.
The original intention of this impressive little hand cannon was to build a solid weapon that balanced well, and at the end of the day, was still capable of fitting smaller hands. It is a half pound lighter than it's steel N- frame counterparts, tipping the scales at just 37.2 ounces.
With a relatively compact grip, recoil is still manageable considering, after all, it is chambered for .44 Magnum. The 2.75" semi- heavy barrel features an elegantly sculpted half- length under lug that protects the ejector rod from being bent if the underside of the barrel were to violently strike against something, or get dropped on the pavement.
It has traditional style adjustable sights with a white outline rear and red ramp front. With the aid of a small flathead screwdriver, the rear sight is adjustable for both windage and elevation.
The Smith & Wesson Model 69 is equally at home firing full power .44 Magnum, as it is reduced recoil .44 Special loads. While its a bit overpowered and probably too heavy to serve as a self- defense gun, the smooth organic contours make it a superb back- up gun to take along on a hunting trip or while hiking in bear country.
It has a transfer bar safety mounted on the frame. If you're unfamiliar with the function of a transfer bar, it is a thin strip of metal that rises once the trigger is squeezed, allowing the hammer's energy to be transferred to the firing pin and then on to the primer.
The invention of the transfer bar safety allowed revolvers to be carried fully loaded without the chance of the hammer being snagged and / or being dropped, then inadvertently fired. In addition, the gun is equipped with a built in key lock to disable the gun for safe storage.
The Smith & Wesson Model 69 has a satin finish that provides an overall pleasing appearance, while the solid forged stainless steel chassis ensures longevity. Shots can be fired in either a double action mode, or for greater precision, the hammer can be easily cocked back and fired using a crisp single action trigger pull.
The hammer is checkered on the top side, making cocking sure and foolproof. The double action mode is long, but the trigger remains smooth throughout. When cocking the hammer for single action, the trigger pull is almost imperceptible.
An extremely smooth cylinder latch, combined with positive cartridge extraction, make reloading easy. A soft rubber grip accommodates all three of the shooters fingers for a firm and secure hold, and also helps to absorb recoil.
Overall, the Smith & Wesson Model 69 is an excellent choice for any shooter looking for a versatile, simple to use, accurate, reliable and powerful handgun.
