Sig Sauer P229 Pro Series 9mm start at Champion Firearms:
The Cadillac of Carry Guns. The Sig Sauer P229 is one in a series of high quality, dependable, durable and considered by many to be the most accurate out of the box handgun available today. It hit the drawing boards in 1990 and subsequently would be the first pistol manufactured in SIG's Exeter, New Hampshire plant. After a devastating 1986 FBI shootout in Miami that left the feds feeling their 9mm's and .38's had failed them, the decision was made to begin looking for a new cartridge with more stopping power.
It was determined that the battle tested .45ACP was simply too big and bulky, so they turned to the ultra hot 10mm. However, this potent cartridge was soon decommissioned by the FBI because it simply had too much recoil, and the large frame pistol proved too large for the small handed. Ultimately, a compromise was made between the 9mm and 10mm, where the latter cartridge would be cut down and the .40S/W (10x23mm vs. 10x25mm) was born.
While most firearms manufacturers began to chamber existing 9mm pistols for the new .40S/W law enforcement cartridge, Sig Sauer wisely reinforced the P229 with a slightly heavier slide and released the model in 1992. The proven durability, dependability and uncanny accuracy has resulted in the P229 being carried by the U.S. Secret Service and the Office of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It is also the standard duty pistol for the U.S. Coast Guard, and is carried by numerous other federal, state and local law enforcement agencies across the country.
The Sig Sauer P229 is a short-recoil operated pistol that has a double action/single action (DA/SA) firing system. It carries a stainless steel slide that sits atop a machined, 7075-T6 lightweight aluminum frame which is black hard-coated over anodizing. The slide also houses an improved, large external extractor positioned at the right rear of the ejection port.
A passive firing pin safety lies hidden within the slide, and 10 diagonal rear-charging grooves enable positive loading and unloading. The rounded accessory rail located on the frame's dust cover allows the user to quickly install lights and lasers. The frontstrap features fine horizontal grooving that improves control and handling.
Unlike many other DA/SA pistols, Sig Sauer positions the hammer decocking lever where it can be depressed with the right thumb, without having to change your grip on the pistol. The slide stop is located just above the decocking lever, and can be manipulated easily. The Sig Sauer P229 weighs in at 32.0 ounces and has a black Nitron slide that is extremely corrosion plus wear resistant.
In case you are unfamiliar with Nitron, this is Sig's term for the Ionbond finish that is administered at a specialty coating company's third party facility. Ionbond is a firearms finish that is applied through a Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) process. This involves the depositing of diamond-like carbon coatings via a vacuum, and results in a finish that will provide years of protection against wear while retaining a nice appearance.
With a 3.9" barrel and a high capacity fifteen round magazine, the P229 has a double action trigger pull of around 10lbs., where single action subsequently resets to just 4.4lbs. A set of X-Ray Tritium 3-dot night sights sit on top of the slide, are highly visible, easy to use and track well.
For service or repair, the pistol is backed by a manufacturers lifetime warranty. Overall, the Sig Sauer P229 is accurate, dependable, safe, simple to operate and is made here in the U.S.A.
