Sig Sauer P220 Legion DA/SA 4.4" .45ACP start at Champion Firearms:
Unfailing Reliability. The Sig Sauer P220 Elite is a single column, recoil operated, semi-automatic pistol with a first shot double-action, with a subsequent single-action trigger system. When the pistol first hit the market back in the 1970's, it was different than anything else that came before.
The P220 had two major innovations that made it truly revolutionary. Its multi-piece slide was formed from heavy sheet metal and was fitted with a separate pinned-in breechblock. This feature made it easier to successfully retrofit the design to any caliber, paving the way for later models such as the P225, P226, P227, P228, P229, etc.
Another significant innovation was the use of the ejection port as a locking point for the barrel. Sig Sauer P220 barrels have a squared hood. Cams located on the barrel's underside work in conjunction with a steel block located inside the aluminum frame to index the barrel hood into the ejection port when the slide locks into battery. This unique feature has been widely copied all over the world.
The operational feature that distinguished the Sig Sauer P220 most was a traditional double action trigger pull that was integrated with a frame mounted controlled decocking lever, with the later addition of a rebound hammer. When the hammer is down in carry mode, trigger pressure through an arc will raise the hammer to a fully ready position and then release to fire. Upon firing, the slide cycles the hammer to a fully cocked position, where subsequent trigger pull are a short, crisp single action.
If the shooter stops firing, they can quickly and safely decock the hammer without having to change their grip. The hammer motion is controlled and does not slap down against the frame. For some unforeseen reason, should the shooter have a brain lapse and manually lower the hammer by thumb, a safety mechanism rebounds it back into a half-cock mode that remains off the firing pin until the trigger is pulled. The inherent security of the design is the primary reason the Sig Sauer P220 does not need a manual safety to function properly at the highest levels.
Original contract models were supplied with phosphate or nickel-plated internal parts. The P220 started out utilizing a two-piece breech-block roll-pin system, but now incorporates a solid stainless steel pin. In 1996, once production shifted from Germany to the U.S.A., Sig Sauer started manufacturing the P220 with a slide machined from solid bar stock.
These slides were much stronger, heavier duty and allowed the pistol to be chambered in the more powerful cartridges. In addition, the slide velocity and recoil were tamed by the increased mass of the CNC machined slide. This is a short-recoil operated pistol that carries its stainless steel slide that sits atop a machined steel frame. The slide also houses an improved, large external extractor positioned at the right rear of the ejection port.
A passive firing pin safety lies hidden within the slide, and 10 diagonal rear-charging grooves enable positive loading and unloading. The rounded accessory rail can be found on the dust cover, which allows the user to quickly install lights and lasers. The frontstrap features fine horizontal grooving. The P220 Legion Duo-Tone features gray G10 grips. These stippled polymer grips provide a secure hold while firing the pistol.
The slide stop is located next to the thumb safety, and can be manipulated easily. Several built-in safety features make it suitable for concealed carry. The hammer is blocked from contacting the firing pin if dropped. As previously mentioned, it has a rebounding hammer design, and is blocked from moving forward unless the trigger is held to the rear. Also, the firing pin block prevents the firing pin from moving forward unless the trigger is held to the rear.
The Sig Sauer P220 Elite weighs in at a beefy 44.1 ounces and has a black Nitron slide, which is extremely corrosion plus wear resistant, matched with a stainless slide. In case you are unfamiliar with Nitron, this is Sig's term for the Ionbond finish that is administered at a specialty coating company's third party facility. Ionbond is a firearms finish that is applied through a Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) process. This involves the depositing of diamond-like carbon coatings via a vacuum, and results in a finish that will provide years of protection against wear while retaining a nice appearance.
With a 4.4 barrel and an eight round magazine, the P220 Elite has a single action trigger pull of just 4.4lbs. A set Sig X-Ray Night Sights sit on top of the slide, are highly visible, easy to use and track well.
For service or repair, the pistol is backed by a manufacturers lifetime warranty. Overall, the Sig Sauer P220 Legion is accurate, dependable, safe, simple to operate and is made here in the U.S.A.
