The Affordable Modern Sporting Rifle. The Smith & Wesson M&P15 Sport II is an entry level rifle offered at an incredibly affordable price. If one were to piece together and build an AR-15 equivalent to the Sport, using the least expensive components available on the market, it is doubtful that it would save any money over buying this factory built Smith & Wesson.

The primary difference would be that the rifle cobbled together with parts from various manufacturers would lack an implied comprehensive warranty. At least with the Smith & Wesson M&P15 Sport you know you are buying a rifle that a reputable manufacturer will stand behind.

Did Smith & Wesson cut any corners to get the M&P15 Sport price down so low? It is a valid question that many customers frequently ask, but this is certainly not the case. One of the most notable differences has to do with the lower receiver. Typical MIL-SPEC lowers have a cut-out at the trigger guard that requires a separate piece to fill in the gap, and this must be pinned in place.

With the M&P15 Sport, Smith & Wesson manufactured a forged lower receiver with an integral triggerguard built in as one single unit. Not only is this configuration more solid, but it's also more comfortable for the shooting hand during prolonged fire due to the fact the MIL-SPEC trigger has a tendency to blister the knuckle of your middle finger. The integrated trigger guard has also been oversized to accommodate winter gloves.

In addition to the lower receiver modification, there is no chrome lined barrel
. The Sport II, unlike the original Sport, does have a dust cover and a forward assist. At the heart of the Smith & Wesson M&P15 Sport is a direct gas impingement system. Impingement is the standard that the U.S. military's M-16 and law enforcement AR-15 rifles are based on.

While many argue that it has a tendency to accumulate more gases and fouling in the action that piston driven systems, again if properly maintained, impingement systems are nevertheless supremely reliable. In addition, direct impingement is far more cost effective, weighs less and tends to be more accurate.

To compensate for the lack of a chrome lined barrel, Smith & Wesson has black Melonited their 16" 4140 steel standard contour barrel and claims that the bare bones approach has no effect on durability. In testing and development, the company has run a combined total of 170,000 rounds, using different types of ammo, through two different Sport rifles without any damage to the Melonite finish.

The Smith & Wesson M&P15 Volunteer XV includes a Magpul 30-round P-Mag, a 6- position telescoping buttstock, T- markings on the Picatinny flat top rail for mounting optics , a folding Magpul MBUS rear sight, an adjustable A2 front sight, a bayonet lug and proper staking of the castle nut plus gas key.

The gun weighs in at 6.45 pounds and is backed by the company's lifetime service policy. Overall, the Smith & Wesson M&P15 Sport is a highly accurate, reliable and well built rifle capable of matching the performance of AR-15's that sell for hundreds more.
