Potent Pocket Protection.
Sturm, Ruger and Company was founded in 1949 by business partners Alexander ("Alex") McCormick Sturm and William ("Bill") Batterman Ruger. Prior to the partnership, Bill Ruger had previously designed machine guns for the U.S. military during World War II and afterwards, successfully duplicated two Japanese Baby Nambu pistols in his garage based on samples acquired from a Marine.

It would serve as the basis for launching the company when Ruger ingeniously combined the looks of a German 9mm Luger with rimfire engineering from the Colt Woodsman and the operating mechanism of the Nambu. Bill Ruger and Alex Sturm rented a small machine shop in Southport, Connecticut and immediately introduced the world to the greatest rimfire pistol in history-- the legendary MK-I, which still continues to this day in its third generation.

Alex Sturm was married to the granddaughter of President Teddy Roosevelt, was a Yale graduate, a talented artist and business entrepreneur that supplied the capital investment to start the fledgling company. In addition, he personally designed the famous Germanic heraldic red eagle that still serves as Ruger's company logo.

Bill Ruger supplied the business acumen plus technical-know-how as a skilled gunsmith and celebrated inventor. Tragically in 1951, Alex Sturm fell seriously ill and died at the age of 28 just as the company was beginning to gain traction.

After Sturm's passing, Bill Ruger mourned the loss of his old friend and business partner by permanently changing the company's distinctive red eagle logo to solid black (or white, shrouded in black), where it remains to this day in remembrance. Bill Ruger would go on to lead the company to world prominence, becoming the largest manufacturer of firearms in the United States.

A pioneering legend in American industry until his death in 2002, Ruger had a hand in the design and styling of every single gun the company produced while under his direction. To date, Sturm Ruger has manufactured more than 30-million firearms, while also becoming a leading supplier of precision investment castings in diverse industries such as aerospace, automotive and even golf clubs.

The LC9s is aimed squarely at the concealed carry market. It is based, in part, on the highly successful Ruger LCP design, but is chambered for the more potent 9mm cartridge while sharing the same super strong lightweight glass filled nylon style frame.

Weighing in at just 17.2 ounces, the Ruger LC9s is a single stack pistol with a 7+1 capacity. With a width of a mere 0.90", it has one of the slimmest profiles of any 9mm micro compact on the market.

Unlike many of its competitors, the LC9s fits naturally in the hand. The slide automatically locks back when empty and has both manual thumb and magazine disconnect safety's installed.

As for its model designation, the "s" stands for Striker-- which striker driven pistols represents a major advantage over their hammer driven counterparts. Not only are there fewer moving parts, striker-fire pistols typically have much smoother and more consistent triggers that double action autos. In self-defense situations, this carries the advantage of more precise shots fired.

For a pocket sized gun with low profile sights, the Ruger surprisingly maintains excellent accuracy. Even though it is a micro compact design, in realistic self-defense situation
s in which the gun is likely to be used, the LC9s has all the accuracy anyone would require to effectively get the job done.

Mechanically, the EC9s is a striker fired, locked breech design with a long trigger pull arch for safety. Dual coil springs surround a nylon guide rod for reduced felt recoil. The sides, front and rear of the grip frame are aggressively checkered for a secure grasp while firing, while the magazine release button has just enough height for positive engagement without over-protruding.

All edges, surfaces and corners are beveled, then rounded for ease of carrying, drawing and holstering. The magazine release is easy to reach by the thumb of the shooting hand. It engages easily, but will not cause any problems with the magazine popping out inadvertently while in your pocket, purse or waistband.

Takedown for cleaning and maintenance is easily accomplished by first checking to ensure the chamber is empty, then sliding out the dissassembly pin for slide removal. The pistol is shipped with a seven round flat based magazine floorplate that provides maximum concealment. For a better grasp in larger hands, the package includes an extended finger extension floorplate that is painlessly substituted out for the original.

Because all sharp edges have been removed, the trigger does not pinch the shooting finger as sometimes happens with other pocket pistols. A hardened steel alloy slide wears a matte blued finish and houses the 3.12- inch barrel. The pivoting external extractor design is notably more massive and heavy duty than most extractors on similar sized compact 9mm pistols.

Reliability is excellent, where malfunctions or failure to feed reports are rare. Even though the pistol is extremely compact, recoil is certainly manageable-- even with high velocity self-defense loads.

While Ruger does not provide a written warranty, the company has always promptly, professionally and courteously repaired the extremely limited number of malfunctioning firearms we've sent them. In our humble opinion, they have a better warranty and service track record than many manufacturer's offering a so-called "limited lifetime" policy (which by the way, is not your lifetime, but what a particular manufacturer perceives to be the life of the gun).

Overall, the Ruger EC9s is a versatile self-defense pistol designed to be carried either in the waistband, or in the pocket, and will make a formidable concealed carry pistol that is designed to provide many years of reliable service.
