Low prices on the IWI Tavor X95 Bullpup 16.5" Black in .223/5.56 start at Champion Firearms-
The Hebrew Hammer. Recently adopted to replace the aging M-16 rifle, the new Tavor bullpup was designed for the highly respected Israeli Defense Forces. The Tavor first saw military action on March 29th, 2002 in "Operation Defensive Shield" in response to a Palestinian suicide bombing known as the "Passover Massacre".
This was the largest military operation in the West Bank since the "Six Day War". The rifle has since become standard issue with the highly decorated Israeli Highland, Golani & Nahal Brigades.
The gun is assembled in the Harrisburg, Pennsylvania from Israeli & U.S. made parts. This civilian version of the Israeli bullpup shares the same design advantages of its military counterpart: short overall length, longer barrel in relation to overall length and center of gravity that is closer to the shooter.
The concept is not a new one. An IWI engineering team evaluated the best, most historically successful bullpup rifles and features to simplify the design, thereby maximizing reliability. The result was the Tavor semi- automatic rifle, and its newest iteration is the Tavor X95.
While ultimately more maneuverable in the tight confines of urban defense, the primary reason for the bullpup's continued development is to operate in close quarters where space is tight and the corners sharp. IWI claims that the Tavor is far more reliable than the AR-15 platform.
At the heart of the design lies its gas piston driven system. The IWI Tavor X95 has an amazing overall length of only 28-1/8 inches, which is 12- inches shorter than a comparable AR-15 carbine. This reduction in size allows you to move in and out of vehicles easier, navigating through hallways and around corners. The rifle is so compact that it fits in places where only a Class 3 SBR could previously go.
At 16.5 inches, the chrome lined hammer forged barrel comes with an M16A2 style flash hider. The rifle's 1:7" twist barrel is optimized for heavier rounds such as the 69-grain match round, while also capable of stabilizing standard 55- grain ball ammo.
Operation is accomplished by way of a long-stroke gas piston with a carrier controlled rotating bolt. The bolt assembly is removed as a self-contained unit with a captured recoil spring. The bolt features a beefy claw extractor and plunger style ejector.
Its also interesting to note that the firing pin is spring loaded. Feed is from standard M16/AR-15 magazines and the design incorporates a last round bolt hold-open. The gun weighs in at 7.9 pounds and the furniture wears a tactical black matte finish.
The controls are well laid out and easy to manipulate. A non-reciprocating charging handle is located on the left front of the rifle. These can be swapped over and the charging handle moved to the right side of the rifle.
The safety lever is located at the left top of the pistol grip. This can also be switched to the right side if the user so desires. On the rifle front is a Mil Std 1913 rail section for mounting accessories. For iron sights, the IWI X95 Tavor is home to a blade type folding front with a aperture style rear.
The magazine release is very well placed and easy to manipulate. It consists of a lever mounted at the front of the magazine well. Pushing straight back on this ejects the magazine clear of the rifle. Mounted behind the magazine well is the bolt release.
Pushing up on this button releases the bolt. With just a minimum of practice it is very easy to quickly eject a spent magazine and smoothly insert a fresh one while instantly releasing the bolt. Perhaps one of the most unique attributes of this rifle lies in its modular design. It is capable of being converted to 9mm with an optional conversion kit (sold separately).
Overall, this design is very well thought out and superior to other bullpup models like the Steyr AUG or Century AK-47.
