A Thoroughbred Returns. The Colt Mustang Pocketlite is a pistol designed specifically with personal protection in mind. It is extremely compact, lightweight and easy to conceal. Chambered for .380 auto cartridge, some consider the caliber to be only marginally adequate for self- defense work. Nevertheless, this is a handgun designed for point blank range deadly encounters-- whose sole purpose it is to save your life in an emergency.

There are plenty of other handguns that are chambered in calibers capable of delivering higher terminal ballistics, which are also much more difficult to conceal and therefore, more likely to be sitting at home in a gun safe when you actually need it. A pocket pistol like the Colt Mustang is capable of going anywhere, while being carried all day without discomfort or fatigue. It also makes the ideal back-up gun.

More importantly, it is easy to deploy and even easier to use. Originally introduced in 1983 and issued to to government officials, the Mustang, along with several other excellent Colt series pistols and revolvers, were discontinued by 1996. This was primarily due to the hostile political climate that became highly unfavorable toward many gun manufacturers. To the delight of Colt fans everywhere, the pistol series is back and was reintroduced in early 2011.

Where the original Mustang Pocketlite came equipped with a cast steel slide, this series update from Colt features a slide CNC machined from solid bar stock stainless steel. When combined with the 7075-T6 aircraft grade aluminum alloy frame that has been hardcoat silver anodized, the gun weighs in at a mere 13- ounces unloaded.

Another nice upgrade over the original series is the inclusion of a second magazine. Capacity is 6 + 1 and the pistol fires using a locked-and-cocked single action design reminiscent of the full size 1911. Unlike its big bore counterparts, however, the handgun does not include a grip safety.

This is actually seen as a major advantage on a micro compact pistol, where a grip safety would be increasingly more difficult to successfully disengage and fire the weapon. The Colt Mustang Pocketlite also includes a very positive extended thumb safety that easily depresses. No review would be complete without a word of extreme caution-- if you plan to carry a round loaded in the chamber and then carry the pistol in your pocket, it is highly advisable to do so in conjunction with a holster that blocks off the trigger guard.

The trigger pull itself is what you have come to expect from a Colt single action pistol, which is to say it is crisp and smooth. Yet another upgrade to the Mustang series has been the replacement of the original plastic trigger with a new lightweight aluminum version that breaks more cleanly.

Perhaps the biggest advantage of a pistol like the Colt Mustang Pocketlite over all the other double action pocket .380's on the market is the user friendly single action trigger that, when combined with the locked breech design, make the gun much easier to use. Smaller stature shooters really struggle with blowback double action pistols, not because they are inherently inaccurate, but because they lack the strength top operate properly.

A single action trigger is much easier to squeeze, and therefore gives rise to much more precise shots. Small frame blowback pistols often display horrendous recoil, but the locked breech design of the Colt Mustang Pocketlite not only keeps recoil at a minimum, but also makes the slide much easier to pull back and load the chamber due to lighter recoil spring requirements.

To further aid in minimizing recoil, an upswept beavertail style frame allows a shooter to get a higher grip that is closer to the pistol's bore axis, but also helps prevent slide bite in the case of a rushed shot. The Mustang Pocketlite has a set of checkered polycarbonate grips with the rampant pony logo medallions that provide greater control and maneuverability.

10- vertical grasping grooves are located on each side of the slide and make loading and unloading even easier. By micro-compact standards, the pistol wears an excellent set of snag-free, low profile sights. The government style dovetailed rear, when combined with the fixed front sight, get on target surprisingly well. A 2.75 inch short barrel displays remarkable accuracy for such a small pistol, and the guide rod is surrounded by a pair of coil springs to further buffer recoil and extend frame life.

The pistol is hammer driven and features a commander design to provide consistent and reliable firing pin strikes. For service or repair, the pistol is backed by a manufacturers lifetime warranty.
