Q: How long will a license be valid?

    A: Four+ years for first- time applicants, 5 years for renewals.

Q: Can I start carrying a concealed handgun as soon as I receive my license in the mail?

    A: Yes, but you may not carry before you receive the license.

Q: How difficult are the written & shooting exams?

    A: Both tests are "standardized". In other words, the DPS requires that the exact same shooting test and the exact same written test, no matter where you take the course. It is our classroom section that is unique to Champion Firearms.

• Let's just put it this way, we have a 100% student graduation rate.
• Whether written or shooting, however, a grade of 70% or higher is required to pass this course.
• Although a student need not be an expert to pass the shooting section, all students are expected to know how to safely operate a handgun.
• Most importantly, the ability to follow directions fulfills the definition of "shooting proficiency". Our written test average is 92%.

Q: Once I have successfully passed this course, can I immediately begin to carry my handgun?

    A: No, students must first forward their certification paperwork, along with the non-refundable application fee to the DPS for the background check to be completed.

Q: After passing the course, how long do I have to send in my packet, along with the non-refundable application fee?

    A: Renewals have 6-months, first time applicants have 2 years. Note: renewals may not take the course any earlier than 6-months before a license expires.

Q: Once I submit my application, when should I expect to receive my license?

    A: The department will make every effort to issue your license within 60 days or inform you that you did not meet the eligibility criteria. Once your application is complete, processing may take up to 180 days if your background check reveals potentially disqualifying events or information.
