Frequently Asked Written & Shooting Exams Questions Print E-mail

Q: Do you offer range practice as part of the course?

A: Yes, we have a complimentary range practice session. This practice session is:

  • Only available to registered students in our class
  • Only held the Sunday morning of the scheduled course date
  • Will take place between 6:45 to 7:30 a.m.

Q: Are we taught how to shoot as part of this course?

A: No, all students are expected to know how to shoot prior to the course.

Q: How difficult are the written & shooting exams?

A: Both tests are "standardized". In other words, the DPS requires that the exact same shooting and the exact same written test no matter where you take the course. It is our classroom section that is unique to Champion Firearms.
  • Whether on written or shooting tests, however, a grade of 70% or higher is required to pass this course.
  • Although a student need not be an expert to pass the shooting section, all students are expected to know how to safely operate a handgun.
  • Most importantly, the ability to follow directions fulfills the definition of "shooting proficiency". Our written test average is 92%.

Q: Could you explain the rule concerning different handgun categories?

A: Students who qualify with a semi- automatic (caliber .32 or greater) will be eligible to carry any legal handgun (whether revolver or semi- automatic). Students who qualify with a revolver (.38 caliber or above) may not carry a semi- automatic.

Q: Can I use hand- loaded ammunition for range qualification?

A: No, the state mandates that factory ammunition alone be used for range qualification.

Q: Are there any restrictions with respect to the type of ammunition that may be used on your range?

A: Yes, because we're an indoor range, all ammunition must be the "unleaded" variety. In other words, it must be copper jacketed. Lead round nose ammunition is prohibited. Hint: the projectile portion of copper jacketed ammunition will appear gold in appearance, while lead round nose ammunition will appear darkish gray in color.

Q: Can I use a laser sight or red dot sight for range qualification?

A: No, the state prohibits optical/ laser aiming devices for range qualification.

Q: May I sit down to qualify?

A: Of course - our facility is designed to accommodate folks with physical disabilities. If you would like to sit down in a chair while shooting, please feel free to ask one of the range officers before range qualification begins- they will be happy to furnish a seat. In addition, we are 100% ADA compliant.
